It’s been a year since I moved to Miami and left my business, my home and my friends in Chicago. I was eight months pregnant when we left the Windy City, and even though I had all intentions of taking photo sessions in Miami right away, I was just too pregnant and Miami was just too hot. Combine that with taking care of a toddler, who was adjusting to life in a new city, and house hunting… well, you get the picture. My photography business was definitely on the back burner for a while.
I managed to keep up with my clients via email and Facebook, and I updated my website and blog design. Still, I didn’t really reach out to new clients in Miami and the hot sun didn’t inspire me to get out to the beach and shoot. My belly was getting bigger, my maternity clothes were getting smaller. My camera sat lonely in it’s bag while I sat contentedly on the couch, my pregnant feet happily up.
When my baby was born, just one day after we closed on our new house in Doral, I once again felt inspired. Well, maybe not immediately, but soon after her birth I began to photograph my children again. Having a newborn and a toddler was (and is) difficult to manage, but my photography has been much more inspired because of my children. Sofia inspired me everyday with her cuddly little newborn self, all pink and fresh to the world. Alice constantly amazed me and made me pick up my camera to capture her sweet big sister kisses and loving toddler goodness.
Luckily, our new house gets great natural light and I’m able to photograph my girls in just about every room. I love to take Sofia’s baby pictures in my bed and photograph her in her natural state of play or sleep. Alice is my little wild one and I can’t take enough photos of her just doing her crazy toddler thing. I now have an even greater love of lifestyle photography and a renewed appreciation for beautiful natural light indoors. Because really, some days it’s just too much to take two small children and a camera out for photos.
It’s been almost exactly a year since we moved to Miami and I left my Chicago photography business behind to start this new journey here in the Sunshine State. And even though my high hopes of hitting the ground running didn’t pan out exactly as planned, I’m excited to say that my maternity leave is over and I’m officially doing photo sessions again! I have started slow, with just a few (amazingly awesome!) clients and plan to pick up the pace as my daughter begins preschool in a few weeks. Starting in September, I would love to take on more photo sessions, especially lovely natural light sessions at sunrise on the beach (is that too specific? :). But really… I have tons of great locations and creative ideas in mind, and I can’t wait to use them! I will always fondly miss those who helped me get started in this crazy photography business, but I’m so excited to meet those who will help me continue to grow here in my new home city, Miami.
Thanks for sharing my Miami photography journey! I’ll let you know how this next year goes 🙂
